BOYS II MEN: Essence Music Festival flashback during black history month

My bad, I had so much fun chilling at the Paragon Casino and Resort as well as receiving great gifts from family and friends and Facebook messages, that I forgot to post my Essence Flashback Blog for March! Here it is!
For my ESSENCE Music Festival flashback for March, I am reminiscing on interviewing one of the top musical groups in the country, Boyz II Men. I really enjoyed seeing and interviewing Boyz II Men. I am guilty for playing their Christmas CD all year 'round! Now, I am in love and grateful for their new album entitled Twenty, celebrating being in the business for 20 years. I enjoy listening to my favorite song called Seasons of Loneliness by Boyz II Men and I love their new song More Than You'll Ever Know featuring the amazing Charlie Wilson.

Enjoy this clip from Boyz II Men at the 2011 Essence Music Festival

BASKETBALL WIVES: Essence Music Festival Flashback covered by Kingi Knox

Fans are buzzing about the premiere of Basketball Wives.

The premiere was GREAT and the girls were BEAUTIFUL. I enjoyed watching JENNIFER WILLIAMS on her date and rejoicing with new freedom at her divorce party. I was in awe over the romantic surprise Chad Ochocinco planned for EVELYN LOZADA.

I love how TAMI ROMAN keeps it real as she met new comers KESHA NICHOLS and KENYA BELL with ROYCE REED and SUZIE KETCHAM. I also love how SHAUNIE O’NEAL is so supportive with Jennifer cheering her as she steps out of the box with her liberated freedom.

Now, what I love…love about Tami, Evelyn, and Shaunie is that they are REAL and nice. I interviewed the beautiful ladies of Basketball Wives at Essence Music Festival on radio row in New Orleans. Before my interview I asked my publicist, “Now which one is Shaunie, Ok…which one is Tami, Ok…so is she Evelyn?” I heard about the show, but I never saw the VH1 Basketball Wives. When I met the ladies, the ladies were charismatic during our interview. Tami was personable and FUNNY as she joked about outtakes from the show. Shaunie had a down to earth personality as I asked her questions about the Basketball Wives. After my interview, Shaunie, Tami, & Evelyn shared a laugh as they were surprised by how fast I started The GREATEST Fan radio interview. I expressed, “I talk fast in the beginning so you have enough time to talk to your fans in 60 seconds”.

I immediately noticed how beautiful each of the ladies were before the interview so I asked them about admires. Evelyn quickly stated I am engaged. (I never watched the show so I didn’t know about her status). So, I re-stated my question differently “With your personal love lives, do you (Evelyn, Tami, and Shaunie) have any admires who adores you for who you are and what you do?” Tami, Shaunie, and Evelyn chimed in, “Girl we do”, with blushful smiles and laughter. So, after the interview I knew Evelyn was a strong woman who loves her man, as well as proud to honor him and tell the world. I was so impressed how Shaunie is the Executive Producer of a hit show and managed her beauty, style, and Essence without being STUCK UP. I am proud of her…and all the ladies of Basketball Wives because they are ALL doing there thang. GIRL POWER!!!

After meeting the ladies, I was excited to watch VH1 Basketball Wives. I was happy to see that the girls I met are the women on the show. Now, I know each of the ladies by name. Tami, Shaunie, & Evelyn are BEAUTIFUL, REAL, and NICE who appreciate their FANS!!!

STEVE PERRY: Essence Music Flasback during black history month covered by Kingi Knox

During Black History Month, Verizon wireless during the month of February is running a commercial with LAZ ALONZO, STEVE PERRY, MARVIN SAAP, and others to honor black history. I have had the privilege and honor to interview these men for The GREATEST Fan radio at the Essence Music Festival on radio row.

Batter up 2nd up: Steve Perry.

I really think Laz Alonzo and Steve Perry should be comedians because they have all the jokes! When Steve Perry came to The GREATEST Fan booth at Essence Music Festival, he said "You are beautiful. If anyone is looking for The GREATEST Fan booth, I am going to tell them to look for the booth with all the beautiful women!"

I was flattered by the compliments, but I was more honored to meet the man that cared so much about children education. He went above and beyond making sure to not only build a school for students, but also providing transportation. Even if he had to drive students to school himself.

Even though Steve Perry had plenty of jokes when he entered The GREATEST Fan booth on radio row at Essence Music Festival, education is no laughing matter to him.

We salute Steve Perry for investing in our children for tomorrows future.

WHITNEY HOUSTON is mourned by FANS around the world covered by Kingi Knox

Wow! What a weekend. On Saturday on February 11, 2012 at 3:55 PST, America’s Pop Princess WHITNEY HOUSTON died in her Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills. Immediately Don Lemon, who I had the pleasure to interview and meet at Essence Music Festival, broke the news on CNN. I shared the news with friends, family, and fans. The responses I received were, “Is this a joke?” another fan asked “Is this true, what source told you?” Fans challenged me to reveal my source of this news because no one wanted to believe it was true. Across the world fans was saddened by this news.

Our prayers, love and condolences go out to Bobbi Kristina, Bobby Brown, Cissy Houston, Dionne Warwick, Deanna Warwick, and family. I had the privilege to meet Whitney Houston at the Beverly Hills Hilton where she attended Clive Davis pre-Grammy party. She was so nice and down to earth. I told her as I was growing up, I was teased for being the skinny girl, but when she came on the scene…so many people told me I looked like Whitney Houston. Then, I began to have a new appreciation for my beauty in my skin. With Whitney being a model for me, I was on the homecoming court and class favorites at Belaire High School and then went to being a radio personality in Hollywood working with Oscar award winning actor Jamie Foxx. I also had the privilege to meet Dionne Warwick through my friend Deanna Warwick. I was able to eat and talk with Dionne Warwick in her home for Thanksgiving with other family members. All I could think about was how beautiful this woman was and how I use to watch her on the television show “Solid Gold”. Then I met Bobby Brown backstage at Essence Music Festival. He was so humble, down to earth and appreciative as I told him how great New Edition performed at Essence Music Festival. I am so sorry for the loss for Bobby who shared nearly two decades with Whitney and that she has brought the world great music for 20 years.

Whitney Houston death hurt my heart. My chest was actually hurting. I echoed with so many fans. I also had the privilege of meeting and interviewing LL Cool J backstage at the Essence Music Festival. This man is a man of strength and happiness with a smile. At the Grammy Awards, I could see the hurt and sternness in his face as he expressed how we would all miss Whitney Houston. He stated, “No way to say this, we had a death in the family”. Everyone stayed glued to CNN, as Don Lemon kept us updated as well as sharing quotes from Latoya Jackson, Smokey Robinson, and outpouring of celebrity friends kept texting and calling the CNN station. Heart and Soul, which is on Sirius XM, played Whitney Houston Music all weekend long. Fans were so excited to hear the favorites and new fans was surprised that it was Whitney that sang a song that was always their favorite. My aunt name is Susan, so I got a kick out of listening to “My name is not Susan” on Sirius XM.

We miss you Whitney…….

May Whiteny Houston Rest In Peace as she leaves us with timeless music!!!

LAZ ALONZO: Essence Music Flashback during Black History month covered by Kingi Knox

Batter up: 1st up Laz Alonzo.

Laz is not only talented and handsome; he is truly down to earth. When I met him to interview him at the Verizon stage at the Louisiana Convention Center for Essence Music Festival, he felt like family. Before the interview, he had jokes; immediately following the interview, he was hilarious. Immediately when I saw Laz manager I said to him “Man! Look at Al B. Sure!” and Laz said, “Oh, she got jokes…No, interview for her.” So that broke the ice and made my interview with Laz Alonzo even more comfortable. During the interview we discussed his great performance in the movie entitled Jumping the Broom. I inquired if Laz would be jumping the broom in the near future for The GREATEST Fan radio. Laz Alonzo fans would be very happy to know that he is very down to earth, fun, and have a genuine interest with keeping his fans posted with his journey. Everyone should support anything he is doing such as future movies, appearances, or any other endeavors. Mmmmm…That is a thought: Laz Alonzo should come out with his own broom line. One broom is elegant for weddings and the other broom is for keeping your house clean.

After the interview what made it even more hilarious was while my publicist, Malina Crear, and I were prepping for pictures, Laz got caught on camera CHECKING OUT MY BOXERS!

We salute LAZ ALONZO for his great film contributions and his genuine love & appreciation for his fans.

Saluting JAMIE FOXX during Black History month covered by Kingi Knox

During Black History Month, Kingi Knox with The GREATEST Fan salutes Oscar-award winning actor JAMIE FOXX for his amazing performance in “Ray” and to be able to entertain us with great music, comedy, and radio. Jamie Foxx depiction of Mr. Ray Charles earned him his very own Oscar and Jamie’s performance in a great movie was incredible and believable. It was amazing to meet Jamie Foxx and work with a man that is so humble.
By being a radio personality for Speedy's Comedy Corner, on Jamie Foxx FOXXHOLE channel and appearing on the Jamie Foxx Show, I was able to learn about the man, musician, and the mogul. I was able to watch Jamie Foxx interview Academy Award winning rap group Three 6 Mafia with fun and intelligence. He switched his style after interviewing Three 6 Mafia, when he interviewed the actress from Africa. During J. Foxx interviews, I was able to observe him singing impromptu style while Marques Anthony plays the keyboard for special celebrity musical guests. Jamie Foxx needs no introduction for we know his talents. I am more in awe of the person behind the mega-star. It is rare that you find a man on Jamie Foxx’ level that is part of our black royalty that goes out of his way to help others personally and professionally.

The night before the MTV Video Music Awards, I interviewed celebrities at the Frankie Beverly & Maze for twelve long hours. The next day, I did red carpet interviews at the MTV VMA’s and celebrity interviews at Dave Brown’s MTV VMA after party. By the time I made it to the after party, I was exhausted so I put my microphone away and out of nowhere actors/comedians Shawn Wayans and Affion Crockett took their water bottles out and they said to me, “Oh, you NOT doing any more interviews…WE ARE GOING TO INTERVIEW YOU!” All of this going on, the whole while, I had no idea Jamie Foxx was watching me. I went to say hello to Johnny Mack and Jamie. I was surprised what had happened when Jamie Foxx gave me the “thumbs up.” At that point, it was like I had a Red Bull energy drink boost and I pulled out my microphone to conduct another (2) two hours of interviews. I learned a very important life lesson that day. You can build up a person with your words or actions and at that moment Jamie Foxx empowered me.

I was fortunate to work with a talented radio ensemble cast on Jamie Foxx Sirius XM FOXXHOLE channel. It was fantastic to work with and learn from the Speedy’s Comedy Corner radio personalities Speedy, Lewis Dix, Corey Holcomb, Tanjareen Martin, Rodney Perry, Clayton Thomas, and Zo Williams. Brandy Palmer, Executive Producer of FOXXHOLE live, and Marcus “LY” Kirkwood, FOXXHOLE Engineer, encouragement and support propelled me with creativity while I was a radio personality for FOXXHOLE. It was great to be under the direction of Foxxhole producers Johnny Mack and Guy Black. I am forever grateful for FOXXHOLE Executive Producer, Marcus King, who allowed me to conduct FOXXHOLE interviews at Grambling State University homecoming of students, fans, and faculty that elected President Barack Obama.

“I salute you, Jamie Foxx, for your ICONIC talents and I am grateful for you opening doors for me and radio personalities”, Kingi Knox.

Happy Super Bowl XLVL weekend!!! Saluting Mike Tomlin and Doug Williams Super Bowl Champions during BLACK HISTORY month by Kingi Knox

During BLACK HISTORY month The GREATEST Fan salutes Super Bowl Champions Mike Tomlin and Doug Williams.

DOUG WILLIAMS made history being the 1st African American quarterback and Super Bowl MVP leading the Washington Redskins to a 42-10 victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXII. Doug Williams also made history as he returned to coach football at Grambling State University in February 2011. He lead his team to State Farm Bayou Classic and SWAC championship victories, while opening doors for the G-Men football players as well as coaching his son, Doug Williams, Jr., teaching them the game of football as well as the game of life.

MIKE TOMLIN made history being the youngest head coach to lead his team to a Super Bowl victory, when the Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII on February 1, 2009. Mike Tomlin is the current head coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League. Tomlin is the 3rd youngest head coach in any of the four major North American Professional sports. He is the tenth African-American head coach in NFL history, and first in Steelers history.

"I was blessed to share the stage with these two handsome and talented men when I co-hosted the Eddie G. Robinson Museum opening dedication with Louisiana Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne", shares Kingi Knox. The Eddie G. Robinson Museum opening was a historical dedication to Coach Eddie Robinson's life with keynote speakers Mike Tomlin, Doug Williams, Brian Kelly, and GSU Hall of Famers. Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell and the Mayor of Grambling were special guests that attended the dedication. The dedication attendees were honored to listen to a heart felt letter written by President Barack Obama.

"I was honored to make history sharing the life of Eddie G. Robinson to the world as Mistress of Ceremonies of the Eddie G. Robinson museum opening dedication and learn from two world champions Doug Williams and Mike Tomlin", Kingi Knox.

A New Day with Southern University Men's Basketball Coach ROMAN BANKS and Girl Power with Jaguar Women's Basketball Coach SANDY PUGH by Kingi Knox

FANS around Jaguar Nation are buzzing about the Coach Banks and Coach Pugh billboard!

Its a new day with Southern University's new Men's Basketball COACH ROMAN BANKS from Shreveport, LA. I recently interviewed Coach Banks to learn more about him. Coming from an athletic background, Banks was able to learn the game of basketball from people he loves, admires, and respects. Banks father starred at Southern University and played alongside BOB LOVE from the NBA Chicago Bulls, who is Bank’s godfather. I have adopted a quote from Coach Banks to help me in my professional encounters "Win! You need to PLAY like you WANT TO WIN."

Banks is in tune with players on the court, behind their academic studies, and their personal lives. When one of his players lost a family member, Coach Banks stopped our interview and contacted his family immediately. I would describe Coach Banks relationship with his players as having a Heart of Competitiveness. A heart describing someone who cares about his players all while challenging them to always be better than what they already are.

Girl PowerCoach Banks made history Sunday with his longtime friend from Northwestern State University, fellow SU head Women Basketball COACH SANDY PUGH by currently holding the same record for the SWAC conference of 7-2. The Southern University Jaguars men basketball team defeated the Alcorn University Braves 65-54 and the women Jags also came out victorious against Alcorn with a 67-62 win. Both teams of Southern University will travel to compete against my alma mater Grambling State University this weekend to take on the GSU Tigers basketball team at 3 p.m. Saturday, under the leadership of Bobby Washington and the Lady Tigers under Donnita Rogers at 5 p.m. Assistant Coach Rodney Kirschner shared, “This game is going to be so interesting because Southern have not defeated Grambling in 11 years in the new assembly center”. Well, the HEAT is on as Southern University Basketball teams head to Grambling today to play the Tigers in the Frederick C. Hobdy assembly center.

What makes a winning team? Ok. 1. The Players. 2. The Coach. 3. The Staff. I was in awe how much the assistant coaches really love what they do. They respect Coach Banks and Coach Pugh and genuinely care about the players. I observed the coaches drilling the players during practice. Immediately, after practice the coaches are helping them with their academics. The staff consists of a diversity background. The Men’s basketball supporting staff consists of Rodney Kirschner, Ryan Price, Morris Scott, and Sheldon Jones. Carlos Funchess, Dave Frank, and Rolanda Monroe are assistant coaches for the Women’s basketball team. The coaches come from great academic institutions from studies to career at Northwestern State University, Arkansas Fort Smith, Florida A&M, Louisiana Monroe and Southern University of New Orleans. I think I can say this is Louisiana Gumbo to full affect. You bring different people together, different backgrounds, and different passions together and you make a Gumbo of Success. Mmmm, I I’ll have a bowl. -)

As of today, the Southern University Jaguar women basketball team is ranked #1 and the men are ranked #2 in the South Western Athletic Conference. Sandy Pugh is a beautiful woman doing great things on the court as well as being Southern University's Interim Athletic Director, while coaching the Lady Jags to conferences #1 spot. Coach Pugh, as interim athletics director, oversees the entire affairs of the department in conjunction with her coaching duties.

Sandy, Pose and Say Cheese…Coach Sandy Pugh deserves to be in Essence Magazine!...Picture Perfect!
