Kingi Knox, Grambling State University Alumi, remembers Coach Eddie Robinson during Air Force Reserve Celebration before being on ESPN's SportsNation
Kingi Knox email to Cherie W Kirkland
Sunday, December 20, 2015
At Grambling State University, Coach Eddie Robinson asked me what my name means. I did not like my name because it was hard for some people to pronounce I initial introductions. Coach Rob said go find out what your name mean and tell me. Week later, I saw Coach Rob, I told him my name came out of a mythology book that my mom picked and my father interprets it to be flexible and flow like the river because Kingi is name of a river in Africa. Coach Rob gave me 2 tickets to Bayou Classic. Later in years, I covered media and I was on NBC for Bayou Classic with the support of Super Bowl Quarterback MVP Doug Williams and Eddie Robinson, Jr.
Yesterday, on Saturday I thought I saw Cherie's daughter before ESPN SportsNation Road show. I thought it would be nice to see Cherie. I dismissed the thought because it wasn't planned. At that moment, I thought of Coach Eddie Robinson and his dream for Bayou Classic, his accomplishments with College football, and how is responsible for many college athletes going to the NFL.
Later that day, I was on ESPN's SportsNation and met Jay Harris. Happy to be at the AFR Celebration Bowl, but I felt a void. I missed Grambling. Then, after the game I saw Cherie Kirkland and MY GRAMfam. I told Cherie, "I saw your daughter today". She replied, "MY DAUGHTER IS NOTE HERE" I replied, "WOW COACH EDDIE ROBINSON LEGACY LIVES ON"~

POSTGAME Notes for Air Force Reserves Celebration Bowl: The GREATEST Fan exclusive Post-Game FAN coverage from ESPN events
Postgame Notes – 2015
Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl
North Carolina A&T 41,
Alcorn State 34
December 19, 2015 – Georgia
Dome (Atlanta, Ga.)
Attendance:
35,528
Offensive
MVP: Tarik Cohen, North Carolina A&T
Defensive MVP: Denzel Jones,
North Carolina A&T
North Carolina A&T Team
Notes
The
victory secured North Carolina A&T the inaugural Air Force Reserve
Celebration Bowl title.
A&T
also secured its third 10-win season – 11 wins in 1999 and 10 wins in 2003.
A&T
has twice previously played in the Georgia Dome – falling twice to South
Carolina State (29-24 in 2013 and 13-0 in 2014).
The
Aggies are now 10-1 in their last 11 games against FCS opponents away from
home.
Head coach Rod Broadway
improved to 34-1 in his career when leading at the half.
Tarik Cohen
With
1,543 rushing yards this season, he sets the school’s single-season rushing
record.
Has
amassed seven straight 100-yard rushing games, including Saturday’s 295-yard
effort on 22 carries. He extended his school record with 21 100-yard rushing
games in his career.
It
also stands as Cohen’s fourth career 200-yard rushing game.
He
had five carries for 166 yards and an 83-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
His
295 yards rushing stands as the third-best single-game rushing effort in school
history. Maurice Hicks gained 437 yards versus Morgan State in 2001 and Hicks
also had 353 yards versus South Carolina State in 2000.
Cohen’s
83-yard rush is tied for the fourth-longest rushing play in school history, and
the longest by an Aggie since 1996 – an 84-yard rush by Michael Basnight vs.
Florida A&M.
That rush is tied for the
seventh-longest rush in the FCS this season and the longest in the MEAC.
Khris Gardin
With
74 punt return yards in the game, Gardin broke the FCS record for punt return
yards in a season. He finished with 740 yards this season, breaking the
previous record of 667 yards set by Montana’s Tuff Harris in 2006.
Gardin
returned the first punt of the game 74 yards for a touchdown – his third punt
return touchdown this season
It was his second-longest
return of the season (82-yarder for a touchdown versus Howard). Gardin also had
a 71-yard punt return for touchdown versus Hampton.
Alcorn State Team Notes
Alcorn
State won the only previous meeting versus North Carolina A&T – a 16-13
decision in 2004.
Had not dropped a road/neutral
site game since the opening week of the season – a loss at Georgia Tech on
Sept. 3.
Alcorn State’s only three
setbacks against FCS opponents were by a combined 14 points this season – 35-24
to Grambling State, 40-34 to Prairie View A&M and Saturday’s 41-34 decision
to NC A&T.
Anthony Williams, Jr.
Alcorn
State’s first score of the game was an 84-yard punt return for touchdown by
Anthony Williams, Jr.
Williams’
return was a season-long punt return for Alcorn.
That
return was tied for the seventh-longest punt return in the FCS this season and
the longest in the SWAC.
Williams also recorded an
interception, recovered a blocked field goal and finished the game with XX
tackles
Darryan Ragsdale
Ragsdale ends the season 87
yards shy of Alcorn State’s single-season rushing record of 1,286 yards.
Ragsdale finished with 1,183 yards.
Warren Gatewood
His blocked field goal in the
third quarter was the first of his career and the third blocked kick by Alcorn
State as a team this season.

Air Force Reserves Celebration Bowl: The GREATEST Fan exclusive FAN coverage from ESPN events on ABC
FANS are buzzing about...
Air Force Reserves
CELEBRATION BOWL
FANS has been sending us their questions.
Question:
What is the Celebration Bowl?
Celebration Bowl is presented to the FANS by the title sponsor Air Force Reserves and produced by ESPN on ABC, which celebrates HBCU football in a competition between the MEAC champion and the SWAC champion.
What is MEAC?
Mid Eastern Athletic Conference, which is led by Commissioner Dennis Thomas. North Carolina A&T is part of the MEAC.
What is SWAC?
South Western Athletic Conference, which is led by Commissioner Duer Sharp. Alcorn State University is part of the SWAC
How is the Celebration Bowl different from the Heritage Bowl?
"The Celebration Bowl Mission is different and Goal is different.
BOTH CHAMPIONS ARE IN THE GAME", MEAC Commissioner Dennis Thomas
MEAC wins the AFR Celebration Bowl. North Carolina A&T (MEAC Champion) defeated Alcorn State University (SWAC Champion) 41 to 34. FANS were in attendance with 35,535 fans. Air Force Celebration Bowl took place in the Georgia Dome on December 19, 2015 in history as the inaugural bowl presented by the title sponsor of Air Force Reserves was produced by ESPN on ABC, which celebrates HBCU football in a competition between the MEAC champion and the SWAC champion.
Now the FAN fun,
The GREATEST Fan hosted by Kingi Knox was featured on The Carlos Brown Pre-Game show at 9:00 AM to 11 AM. Kingi was part of an ensemble cast discussing HBCU sports and culture with Truck and Charles Edmond in the Georgia Dome Press Box for the Carlos Brown Show.
Next,
ESPN Nation was hosted by Jay Harris, Lisa Kerney, and Cari Champion outside with a very cooool breeze, but the FANS were fired up with excitement. Kingi Knox was on ESPN's SportsNation with FAN fun and was humbled to meet Jay Harris as she watched Jay take pictures with lots of FANS. SWAC Commissioner Duer Sharp and Celebration Bowl Executive Director John Grant were interviewed on ESPN's SportsNation with FANS as a GREAT backdrop. Commissioner Sharp dedicated the Celeberation Bowl experience to the fans. Several Alcorn fans chanted, "we love SHARP!".
Next,
Kingi Knox returned to the Georgia Dome to watch an intensed game Coached by Jay Hopson for Alcorn and North Carolina A&T coached by Rod Broadway. Tarik Cohen won the Offensive MVP and Denzel Jones won the Defensive MVP.
Lastly,
Kingi Knox was able to personally interview MEAC Commissioner Dennis Tomas. "The turtle didn't get on the fence by his self. He needed help. That is how the Celebration Bowl got on ESPN. It took a team of people to make that happen", Commissioner Dennis Thomas. Commissioner Thomas encouraged dreamers to believe in yourself. The risk will out weight the REWARDS.
I hope you enjoyed your FANucation.

I knew Erica Wright at Grambling State University. I had the honor to go to school with Erica/Erykah. My fondest image of Erica/Erykah was not just her performing on stage, I remember this gorgeous ivory outfit she had on at Grambling State's football game. I gave her a compliment and she received the compliment with humility and kindness. We shared small talk before going in our separate directions to watch the the game.
Then, I was honored to cover Erykah Badu for Essence Festival and watch her amazing power as she entertained the Essence Festival FANS at the Mercedes Superdome in New Orleans,LA
When I met Erica Wright, I saw STAR POWER. Now, the world knows Erykah Badu as a STAR in her own right.

Grambling State University makes history being the 1st HBCU to play University of California (Cal) at Berkeley-CALIFORNIA LOVE
CALIFORNIA LOVE
GRAMBLING STATE UNIVERSITY WON with University of California
in Berkeley on Saturday, September 7th. GRAMLING WON THE HEARTS OF
CAL FANS with over 60,060 FANS!!!
Grambling G-Men loss to Cal 73 to 14.
Despite the loss with the football teams, Grambling State
University (GSU) WON with admiration, respect, and appreciation from University
of California (Cal). GSU made history being the 1st HBCU to play at
Berkeley.
I have traveled many places and seen many faces.
My presence in Berkeley felt like Spike Lee’s School Daze.
Now, journey with me….
I parked my car in the parking garage for Media staff. I was prepared to pay $25.00 as I saw the signs advertising the cost for public parking. I was surprised and GREATful when my parking was free. I thought, wow, THANK YOU CAL I was winning.
Then, I had to walk 4 blocks from my car to the Berkeley
Stadium. No complaints with walking I was so elated to see all the students and
the Cal FANS. As I was walking, I heard
from a near distance “Hello Grambling”, which was evident of my support with my
Grambling shirt. I smiled and I
continued to walk. A Cal FAN couple told
me, “Welcome Grambling we are happy you are here”. Another Cal FAN smiled with
admiration as he shared, “Eddie G. Robinson was a GREAT coach and his legacy
lives on forever. Then, I turned the corner passing a Fraternity house with the
Frat guys outside barbecuing. One of the Frats threw the football at me. I
jumped and moved to the right side away from the football. So, my brother
(black guy who is a member of the fraternity) ran up to me and said, “Girl, you
know we got represent. You were supposed to catch the football” as he laughed.
I told him, “I didn’t want to mess up my outfit.” We laughed and I waved to the other fraternity
guys. Then one of the guys from the same fraternity walked up to me and said, “Grambling
looking like that I am going to Grambling…you looking good girl”. I received a
couple of more compliments as I headed to the stadium. I had to laugh…two laughs
1. I received multi-cultural love…they had game :). 2. When I turned the corner
by the Frat House, it reminded me how I would turn the corner by the cafeteria in
front of the Union at Grambling and guys would flirt as the girls walked by
them. I felt my Grambling School Daze.
Love and Respect has NO COLOR.
By the time, I got to the stadium my thighs were killing me. I felt like I had just exercised. It is all love with me laughing from the compliments and smiling from the appreciation of GSU.
After Alan Blakeney greeted me at the Media Information desk at Berkeley, he introduced me to Grambling Student Taylor who was shadowing me as we covered GAME highlights and I reported the FAN fun. Alan is a biker boy with so much HEART. We had so much covering the game. NO COLORS-Just LOVE.
Dr. Larry Pannell led Grambling State University and Universality
of California Band together playing the Star Spangle Banner. Throughout the
game both bands would give the Cal FAN and the GSU FANs a treat by playing
Tupac’s California LOVE!
The half time show was amazing from the Grambling State University World FAMED Tiger Marching Band. I watched from the Press Box. Immediately after performance, Cal FANS engaged me with stating
When Cal would score, the announcer would Cal 7 – GRAMBLING NOTHING,
Cal 21 – GRAMBLING,
“The Band is TERRIFIC” “THAT IS THE BEST BAND WE EVER HAD” “THEY CAN MOVE AND PLAY WITH PURE TALENT.
NOTHING, this went on through Cal 59 GRAMBLING NOTHING. The
score is supposed to be 59 to Zero. Not nothing. I prayed God please let us
score so the announcer can stop saying Grambling Nothing. Prayers answer Grambling
score 14 points against Cal’s 73.
Berkeley felt like a California –Grambling. Grambling is a humble town known for its love and hospitality. And that is what I felt at Berkeley…
Love-1love-California Love!
